City of Ember is a 2008 steampunk film based on the novel of the same name
When mankind is about to come to an end, a group of scientists decide to create and populate a city deep underground. The city of Ember is to last for 200 years after which its inhabitants are to retrieve from a strong box instructions to return to the surface. Over time however, the message is lost and life in Ember is rapidly deteriorating. Their power supply is failing and food is being rationed. It's left to two young adults to unearth the secret of Ember and to lead the way out.
Although Ember is a city that runs primarily on electricity, there is still a heavy reliance on steam and water-power. Much of the technology contains the gadget-like aesthetic of steampunk, especially the stylish machinery that allows the citizens to escape Ember. Corruption also exists in the city, with the mayor becoming lazy and decadent, even at the cost of the civilians' welfare. There are also some borderline fantastical elements, such as the presence of megafauna, which follows a steampunk tradition of taking something not usually given much thought and adding a twist.
