Steampunk elements[]
The character design of Varian, a genius young inventor and alchemist, incorporates staples of steampunk fashion, such as goggles and a brown apron. Varian's lab, as well a many of his inventions, share decidedly steampunk aesthetic, as do other technological anachronisms. In "Queen for a Day", we are introduced to remnants of a previous and more advanced civilization under the mountains of Corona, which was capable of producing a device that control the weather. Similarly, large ancient automatons, some of which Varian later replicates and modifies, guard the treasury of the castle (as seen in the "The Alchemist Returns"). In the episode "Secret of the Sun Drop", Varian hides one of the components of an automaton in the form of music box.
